In the past I've said that I like NJ and this area because it doesn't seem like Mother Nature is trying to kill me. Now we gotten an earthquake and a hurricane in the same week. My mother called to comment on that. :)

But after living in FL and the east end of Long Island I'm probably a little too calm about Irene. For once I'm not living at sea level! However, we will not be sleeping in our bedroom tonight... we have a pair of huge (200 - 300+) trees outside and neither of us want to be in our own bed if Irene decides to tear one out of the ground and send it in toward the house. The tulip tree would take out our room entirely.

All the outdoor furniture is in the garage, most of my plants and things are inside as well. Just a few more to drag in tonight or tomorrow before the rain starts. The grill is strapped down, the gas is turned off. I'll drain a few inches of water out of the pool tomorrow and shock it. I'm sure when I wander around I'll find more things I want to tuck away, but I think we've done about all we can. Kinda wish we had plywood to cover the windows... guess we'll see how this goes and if a window does get smashed, I'll measure them all and get things fitted so we're prepared next time.

We have lanterns and batteries, water and plenty of food and if the power is still out when that runs out, we've got a tankful of gas. I can think of a few friends to visit and one of them is bound to have a hotel nearby with an open room.

You too! Very glad I'm not any closer to NYC than I am... as high as the storm surge is predicted to be, half of Manhattan and the subways are going to flood and as often as Hollywood likes to depict that in disaster movies, we all know what that will look like. :p

Yeah, I'm a little worried about my brother in Jersey City.

oooh.. yeah... I wouldn't want to be in Jersey City, either, but at least from Jersey, you have a variety of routes 'out'. From Long Island... you can't get off the island without a boat or driving down the LIE (which is supposed to be the Long Island EXPRESSWAY.. but that is a lie because it quickly turns into the world's largest parking lot).

Glad to hear from you. Sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on the disaster plan. See you on the other side!

yeah... we have most things figured out.. not sure what to do with the dogs... How the hell do you take them out in a hurricane? I'm tempted to set up the kiddie pool in the garage with newspaper. I'm not sure if I can make that work, but I know even a quick dash outside is going to be a serious challenge, too. :-/

Mmm. Puppy pads or newspaper in the garage sounds sensible to the human. Dogs will think you are nuts. But after a while, they may have no choice. Got kennels to keep them contained against accidents?

Yeah, we use the kennel for our rescue/foster mostly, the spare bathroom for her when we need the kennel for Dexter. I think he will work with me... he's actually trained "go potty" vs "NO Potty!" depending on where we are and what I think is appropriate. She, on the other hand, is still a bit confused by human concerns with elimination. I'm hoping we get get a break in the wind at some point and I can run them to a spot by the corner of the house I know they both will use. Since Dexter's shoulder is still hurt I have a refill of the sedatives we're using to try and keep him quiet... I think I'll end up doping both of them during the storm just to get us all through the 21hrs Irene is going to be chewing up the landscape around us.
