Back in June, for one week, we fostered this pretty girl. She ended up back in Georgia with her rescue when the family failed their background check (very weird story there...) and then she came back to NJ to a family about an hour away. I spoke with them once when they wanted to know a bit more about them, and it seemed like it should work out.

And then their cats freaked out. After days of being hissed and spit at, Maybe chased the one under the bed, and then the other one went after her and slashed her face. Previously, Maybe had been okay with cats (her rescue had several) but after that... not so much so. I tried to work out strategies with them, trying to make sure they didn't have any additional negative interactions, and while Maybe would improve, the cats wouldn't. After having the cats 12 and 14 yrs respectively, the cats won and I went to pick Maybe up on Friday. The woman was very sad giving her back. Her animals don't like her kids either, so she'd wanted a dog they could play with, but I guess she's out of luck until the cats die. :(

Poor Dexter is still limping from his crash into the pool, so I'm having to try and keep both of them quiet so his leg has a chance to heal (it's taking forever). Kinda tempting to just keep her.... but then I don't think Dexter would ever heal and they play so rough he ends up with skin issues. My poor sensitive boy. ;-)

She's a beautiful dog. I wish that we had time/space/a fenced yard/money... I'd be tempted to try and adopt her myself! As it stands, though, it's not really in the cards right now. :(

Isn't she lovely? She was rescued when a bunch of dogs were seized in an abuse case. The other one saved was probably her daughter, the other four were put down before the rescue could get them. Two for aggression, but no reason was listed for the other two, which the rescue said was normal. They don't have space, they're putting down other dogs, rather than waiting for time to run out they empty out kennels early. I cannot imagine having that job.

Time and money are probably the most important resources. She's happy to sack out and watch tv, she's crate trained, and she walks well on a leash, which has been good for me because with Dexter hurt, I didn't have a walking buddy. I need the help getting out to move and this girl hustles. I start slowing down and she pulls ahead to hold the pace. :)

She doesn't seem to have any medical issues and we're keeping her out of the shelter system so she doesn't develop them the way Dexter did, but with dogs... when something does happen, it gets expensive fast. :p

I hope that she finds a forever home soon. She sounds pretty amazing. Really, if finances were a little more stable I would seriously consider it, but when I have to wonder whether bills are going to get paid, it's not the time. Maybe someday...

Someday. And what I've realized with Dexter and this girl, is that there are alot of really good dogs that need homes, so when the time comes, a little looking will find the perfect one for you.

Yeah. Lots of good dogs arriving every day.
This one will find her place. She's in the system and in good shape.

Sad about the psycho kitties. I have to wonder about homes like this though. You can't give the kitties a gated room? Maybe they actually didn't have ROOM for two cats and a dog to have living space together. Or maybe they don't need a dog, period.

They had a miniature poodle, which is almost as old as the cats, and a bird as well. Those seem to have been fairly neutral in all of this. But I think it was fairly chaotic over there, and not much in the way of rules, so the other animals were accustomed to going and doing as they pleased and this lady was uncomfortable about having to confine them and not up to coaching Maybe and setting boundaries for her behavior either. So... there was no where for the situation to go but downhill. :p

I'm hoping I can get a hold of the shelter organizer tomorrow and get Maybe to an adoption day next weekend. And this time (since we've had two fails) *I* want to meet the people who think they want her, cause I'm not so impressed by the job others have done so far.
